The documentary thread running through every wedding, whichever coverage style you choose. No posing, no walking towards camera.
Reportage is everything that happens between the moments people plan for, the glance across the room during a speech, a kid asleep under a table, your dad's face right before he sees you. Nobody arranges these, and if I asked you to recreate one it would look exactly like what it is, staged. So I don't. I stay close, stay quiet, and photograph the day as it actually happens.
This isn't a separate add-on, it's the thread running through the whole day in both The Unscripted and Classic Coverage, even Classic Coverage leans documentary between the more traditional set pieces. If you want a wedding day told honestly rather than through a highlight reel of poses, this is the part of my work that does the heaviest lifting.
It runs alongside everything else, the prep, the group shots, right through to the last dance. Some venues give this style more room to breathe than others, my Top Five Cambridgeshire venues guide notes which ones I find work especially well for it.
About the reportage
What's the difference between documentary and traditional wedding photography?
Documentary photography captures moments as they happen without direction. Traditional photography relies more on posed set-ups. Most weddings, including mine, use a blend of both across the day.
Will you ever ask us to pose?
For portraits and group shots, yes, briefly. For reportage, no, the whole point is capturing what's actually happening rather than what I've arranged.
Does this style suit a smaller, quieter wedding?
Very well. Smaller weddings often have more of these quiet, unguarded moments simply because there's less going on to distract from them.
How do you stay unobtrusive all day?
Mostly by not drawing attention to myself, working with longer lenses when I need distance, and staying aware of where the light and the moment are heading before they happen, rather than reacting after the fact.
Is reportage included in both coverage styles?
Yes, it runs through both, the difference between The Unscripted and Classic Coverage is more about the balance of posed portraits versus documentary moments, not whether reportage is included at all.
Will we still get portraits if we choose this style?
Yes, reportage runs alongside the portraits and group shots, it doesn't replace them. You'll still get dedicated, unhurried time for both.
