Island Hall is an eighteenth century Georgian manor in the centre of Godmanchester, a privately owned home that turns itself into a wedding venue only a handful of times a year, no more than ten weddings annually. Walk through the gates and the town falls away, three acres of manicured grounds sloping down to the river Great Ouse, hidden in plain sight where most people would drive straight past.
Getting ready happens in a series of stunning bedrooms decorated with antiques, some of the best rooms I get to shoot in all year, and the house has one of the best staircases I've worked with, a genuine must for portraits before anyone's even left the building.
Ceremonies happen outside, under a huge oak tree, kingfishers and buzzards audible overhead while you say your vows. Then you cross the bridge, a real one, not just a symbolic gesture, onto an actual island in the river for your wedding breakfast. Time it right and cowslip covered pathways frame the grounds too. Formal portraits always happen with the river as the backdrop, whichever coverage style you choose.
